BM(X) Files: Have fun and do what you want...

In our scramble to get involved in Trans Jam, one of the biggest BMX contests to hit Greenville we got hooked up with pro rider Steve Nowak. Nowak hailing from Greenville, has been a major part of the BMX scene and has traveled all over the country performing and competing. We were thriled to get Nowak reppin FUA he not only has a sick flow on his bike but as a veteran he knows and understands what it mean to have a sponsorship with a brand and continues to support us. We had a brief Q&A with Nowak to see what's been going on see more of Steve in Protown USA: Greenville, NC a feature on the most popular BMX stomping ground in the country.

First off man we’re pumped to have you on the team and repping FUA. You've been riding for a while, a true pioneer for BMX. What is the most epic time you've had riding that you can talk about lol?

Over the years there have been tons of “epic times”. I have been fortunate to travel for contests and demos all over the US and Canada and have made friends all over the world! As far as the best time I feel that is yet to come, especially since I’m now riding and traveling with my son Indiana. I can’t wait for the next big adventure!

For sure man, I can’t wait to road trip and maybe we’ll see a kids line in the future so Indy can rep too!

What setup are you running now?

My setup right now is courtesy of VEINBMX.COM it is a Guerra frame, forks and bars with parts from Ezra. Vein is an awesome site where you can order all your parts direct from the warehouse, it cuts out the “middle man”. The parts are top quality and it feels, rides, and looks great! My bike check is coming soon!

They definitely have some great deals I hope to hit up Vien myself and build a bike.

So you just put together a BMX Jam a couple weeks ago how was that and will there be more?

Well my longtime riding buddy, Marty Stancil and I decided to get together and ride during the crappy winter weather, so we picked Greenville, SC, they have 2 indoor parks that allow bikes. Then we decided to invite as many people that wanted to ride with us on Facebook. It turned out great, we had about 40 riders from GA, NC, and SC all show up and have a blast riding! We’re are planning 2 more this year!

I’m excited, I was real bummed I missed that, but I’m going to for sure try and catch the next one.

Any advice for kids coming up competing and any routines you have before riding?

My main advice for kids coming up is have fun and do what you want, that’s why it’s called freestyle! Nowadays with the internet kids think they have to dress a certain way or have their bike setup just like so and so, which is crazy. Do what’s fun and don’t get burned out. As far as my routines before riding I always pad up so I don’t get hurt, and when riding ramps I make sure I have a helmet on. My son depends on me to provide for him and if I have a head injury I can’t do that. Plus I’m setting a good example.

Hey now they do have to dress a certain way, as long as they’re wearing FUA haha! But you’re right a lot of kids spend their time focusing on getting sponsored that they’re missing the point of just having fun riding and improving.

What about riders out now if they really want to ride BMX as a career what are steps they should take?

SEE ANSWER FOR #4

What was your worst slam?

I’ve had a couple of good ones! The 2 that are the most memorable are hitting my head on a barspin air gone bad, and not remembering I had moving to Georgia, took about an hour for reality to come back and I had headache for 3 days. The other was not as bad of a slam but I tore my appendix and didn’t get check out for a week, after being rushed to surgery I now have no appendix and 2 ft. less of intestine thanks to gangreen.

Wow that’s some gnarly stuff! Can’t stress enough how important it is to wear a lid riding. I’ve had some spills and most I wasn’t wearing a helmet but I’ve gotten old enough and seen enough to know better now for sure.

I know you gotta have tunes playing during a session, what do are you listening to when you ride?

Wow that’s a tough one and I have loved music all my life so my iPod has a WIDE range of music from Barry Manilow to Slayer. When I’m riding I listen to Lucero, Frank Turner, Rise Against, Social Distortion, Metalllica, and even some hip-hop... Lady Gaga is a guilty pleasure as well haha

C’mon man Gaga lol? You do have a selection I’m diggin the range.

You're now living in ATL do you like riding their better than up here or vise versa or can you enjoy any/most spots?

I enjoy riding, period, it doesn’t matter where I’m at. It could be the best skatepark or a grocery store parking lot, I will have fun. I have rode and competed in every aspect of freestyle- dirt, vert, park and flat. As far as Greenville compared to Atlanta its just different stuff, all wood ramps in Greenville to all concrete parks in ATL. However we have some of the best street here in ATL due to the massive size, but I will never forget my roots of cruising downtown Greenville and ECU campus!

True to the sport very nice.

How about a few spots you'd like to hit back up, are there any?

Alaska again for sure, I did shows there and it was so amazing going site seeing everyday. As far as other places I really like riding in Tennessee and Florida.

I imagine Alaska would be cool, and I hope we get a chance to go riding in Florida its one of my fav places so far.

What's your go to move that you've got dialed even on those off days?

Wow probably 360’s over spines and box jumps I guess. I’m also know for my abbubaca ablitiy as well!

Yea I was watching a kid do those [abbubacas] the other day at Jaycee I want to learn it, I know I don’t have the balance for them though.

Checking in with James Moore

I talked with Team FUA skater James Moore to see what he's but up to his plans and how his boards been treating him. He also sent this footy in that we threw together for the 2nd edit for the Forever United skate team.

FUA: First off how long have you been skating?

JM: 3 years and a couple of months

FUA: What is the gnarliest trick you're putting down now? What tricks are you working on?

JM: Idk maybe hardflips and switch flips. I'm working on kickflip backlips on rails.

FUA: Nice. You prefer street skating right? What are some of your favorite spots to skate or your favorite obstacles to skate?

JM: Yeah. I don't really have a favorite spot I try and skate everything. But my favorite obstacles are rails, stairs, gaps and benches.

FUA: That's what's up will you skating any comps soon?
JM: Maybe the contest at the Skatebarn next week.

FUA: Whats the setup you're running now?
JM: A Backdoor shop deck, Theeves and spitfire wheels.

FUA: Who are some of your favorite skaters, do you feel your style reflects that person, or do you try an make your own style?
JM: Nick Merlino, Theotis Beasley, Justin Brock, Ishod Wair I have a lot of favorite skaters. But I just skate and have fun.

FUA: Any other sponsorships you looking to lock down?
JM: Not yet Leap of Faith skateboards hooks me up sometimes but they want me to get a shop sponsor so I'd like to lock that up.

FUA: What are you looking to get out of skating?

JM: I just want to keep getting better and have fun while doing it.

FU M(X) Files: We work just as hard as the guys...

We spoke with the lone lady holding it down with Team FUA, Kimberly Hernandez. After some dominating performances we wanted to know what pushed her to be one of the best in the Women's class, she dropped knowledge on some of her goals and how its been going on 726 Kawi.

Q. When we spoke earlier you mentioned a break from riding, how long has it been since you rode last? Because MX is so demanding do you feel stronger when you get back to the bike or does it take some time to get yourself back in form?

A. I only Took a couple weeks off from practicing, and I haven't raced since an Ultra Series race at Birch Creek a few weeks ago. I actually find that I do come back stronger after I take a break & I plan on taking a couple more so I don't get burnt out.

Q. Word, I imagine it takes a toll week after week. So how did the State Championships at Sanford, NC and the EC qualifier went this year?

A. State championships was awesome this year. I checked out both motos and i was feeling great. The qualifier went pretty good also. First moto I was on it and finished second right behind Amanda Brown. Second moto wasn't as great. I got a bad start and while coming through the pack I took a girl out & proceeded to take myself out as well. I got back up and caught 4th for a 3rd overall.

Q. That's legit! So assuming all goes well and we see you at LL is there any comp you be lining up against that you looking forward to racing?

A. Loretta's will be my first amateur national so I really just want to see how I rank. I'm going for a top ten which I think I can achieve. There's definitely a few girls I'm looking forward to racing but I won't name any so they don't get a big head haha

Q. Haha that's the attitude we like! Who/what do you attribute to your riding style and abilities on the track?

A. I think most of your ability and style comes natural to every rider, but I can thank Nic Hayes and Tony Faverio for helping me with techniques & helping me figure out my weaknesses and strengths on the track.

Q. They've done a great job for sure, you're the first girl I noticed mobbing out there even faster than a lot of guys on the track. What are some of your favorite spots to ride?

A. I practice at 5 Points MX a lot.. I also love a few tracks in Florida and Alabama.

Q. Yeah the official track of EasternMedia.net. Is there any improvements you'd like to see in the world of women's MX?

A. I think Women's motocross has come a long way and I'm very proud of the improvements made already. I think Ashley Fiolek getting a factory ride is awesome and will hopefully start a trend with the other factory teams. As long as women's motocross keeps getting more exposure I think everyone will be able to respect women more and see we work just as hard as the guys.

Yea definitely, you keep it up maybe we'll be able to see one day with a factory ride. You can see more of Kim checked out ahead of the pack on the track and reppin' some FU merchandise off the track.

Juwols Jones: Behind Facebook Fridays

By: Marcus Garrison

From the weekly slaughter of today's hottest tracks the Texas born, New Bern, NC native Juwols Jones' paths are set to takeover the music industry. After a launch of The Black Tape a free mixtape where Juwols showed his range in great form as well as in his last LP The Memo we spoke with Juwols to see what's next to come from the artist who is currently taken his talents to Tampa Bay, Florida.

Q. For those that don't know Juwols Jones, tell us about you. Who is Juwols Jones?

A. I'm a regular guy that loves Music. Lemme take that back, I AM MUSIC. I believe in music, it's all I know. I just want to change the world through music. They call me a rapper, or a producer, or a hip-hop artist, but you can't really put a title on what I do, it's just good music. I was born into a musical family, so my mom was a huge influence. She taught me to write music before I even knew how to write my name in lower-case leters! lol I'm just an artist dat wants his art heard...That's all. I do it for New Bern.

Word. New Bern, has got to feel the love you put out over instrumentals, any fan of yours can tell it's your passion. That early music education really benefited you well before you broke on the scene.

Q. How are you feeling the "Trend" effect in the music industry or in our society in general? I ask this because it feels like its 'whoever is cool' not really based on good music/products.

A. IT SUCKS. I would literally starve for what I do (I've done it before)...I love it that much. But Corporate America is only concerned about that dollar! So what we have now in the music industry is what I call "disposable artists". They put em out while they're hot, then get rid of em and they're on to the next. Back in the day, Labels would invest in an artist...have like, Artist development. Mold them into icons...not anymore. If you notice all the Rap artists that have more than 4 succesful albums were put out in the 90's-early 2000's...the Luda's, Jay-'s, etc...It's hard for an artist to have that type of longevity anymore. I think the equation now is DOLLARS over QUALITY. But I guess society thrives on trends. Fashion, music, its all trends; same instruments, same threads, different trends.

I feel the same way, especially with Forever United Apparel: the only reason a lot of people buy a product is when its on a 'celebrity' or someone they see fit to copy. We've spoke about this before how "a good product is a good product" and its a shame how diluted the market has become with sub-par work, companies just hustling for a buck with no real thought behind it. At the same time that is what help make our businesses and brands successful so again we're left only to take the good with the bad.

What can we expect from your upcoming projects/Loser? Any special collabs you want to shout out.

Ahh yes!! I got the album coming "Loser" and it's my best work yet! I produced the whole album, wrote it. I'm just waiting on paperwork, and I'm kind of hoping a label or distibution label will pick up the project before I drop it. It's that big! Way better than "The Memo".

Of course, I have the "FaceBook Friday" series, which is just MySpace Mondays reborn...but better lol! Everything is better...I'm always improving. If an artist in New Bern is puttin out a mixtape or album, more than likely, I'm on it or got a beat on it; I collab with all. I have a couple of commercials that are to air soon, I thought it was neat how companies in the New Bern area reached out to me for my sound. Weird, considering how I started. Shows, the website, I'm always up to something...ALWAYS! I gather ideas in my sleep...

Right right, I remember the start well. Funny at this very moment it's late and we're grinding to get this done this very moment. That's the sign of a good businessman when you're non-stop into it.

Q. Explain your musical abilities since most artists now aren't really musicians, they believe with a mic and a computer a "rapper" is made. How are you different from that where does Juwols Jones take a step ahead of the wannabe artists.

A. Like I said, I was born into a musical family...you know, the Wrights! So, the first thing I learned was Music Theory: The laws of music. I was a "Acdemically Gifted" kid, but I think it's because I had learned music...which is math and science. I'm fluent in Piano, most people dont know this, but I played trumpet from 6th grade to 8th grade, held first chair the whole time! So that's Piano, Trumpet, Drums, Flute, I'm a immediate level Guitar player. Acoustic and electric. I play Bass Guitar also. I play it all, But piano, that's my bitch!

Definitely a talented musical family, I remember clearly the great music we got to hear coming up in the church.

Q. You shout to Slow Gang over beats, thats your movement, what's the significance of this movement?

A. Ok, let me set it straight! My name is Juwols. The "JU" comes from my name, Jr. The "WOLS" comes from my rhymes being retarded...or slow. I was told Slow people read backwards and such...not all...but some...So "WOLS" is "SLOW" backwards. "JUWOLS" pronounced Jewels. SLOW GANG is my fans.

I noticed that a lot of these movements have artist or members at the forefront, like Taylor Gang, or remember Dipset? I just wanted to have something for my fans...So no ones actually in SLOW GANG, just fans. I like to think of my fans as an elite, smart, intelligent, fly, cool-ass bunch of people. It's not that many yet and the ones I got didn't wait for me to become a trend, they just heard my music, thought it was good, and became fans. They're the trendsetters; Slow Gang Kamikaze, fly till we die. I love them, I try and talk to all of them, because they're my gas to keep going. I'm not rich, I go through things like they do. I'm certaintly not bigger than any of them. We all have to sit down to take a dump, you know? I know if I blow, I'm not going to be able to keep up with everybody, but the ones that's down now I will always be in contact with because they don't owe me anything but yet they make that effort and THAT means the world to me.

Nice, with the pace you running now Slow Gang is growing fast. Its very respectful as far as your approach with your fans, many people forget those who made them successful in the first place. It seems that at some point some people reach a point of fans where they seem to think they're entitled to people liking them and that's not true.

Q. Being a producer/musician/rapper is heavy, what do you do to make others on the come up like yourself respect you and your brand? Do you keep it breezy with a lot of handouts or do you go in business heavy and lock your stuff away until the cash comes out?

A. Well, what I did was study other artists. But not like, ok what are they doing. I studied them as they related to me. Like "Why do I like Curren$y? Jay-Z?" You know, "Why do I like Wiz Khalifa so much?" and I just took that and ran with it. I always say this to artist, "Would you buy a CD from Godfrey Pikes for $5?" hell no!! U don't know who he is, why would you give him your money? That's my approach, I always give out handouts, My whole music catalog is free. it's on www juwols com/music FREE. Just to get my brand out there. When you ask for money, the consumer gets a chance to tell you "NO". With handouts, You can't really say no, it's FREE lol! It's the Art of War. How do I get the money back? Shows. Merch. Albums maybe in the future. But I'd rather my brand spread then hold it back over a dollar. Because as it spreads, the money has no choice but to come back! Now beats, that's another story because it's a lot of work I gotta charge people for those! Sorry!

For sure and with an show around the corner let me take the time to tell fans to buy a ticket to your next show, whether you go or not! It's not like we've haven't heard $7 worth of good original music.

Q. Is signing to a major record label your idea of 'making it' or could you see yourself successful without being a part of Atlantic records or Def Jam?

A. I'm from the SOUTH!! Home of the hustlers, drug dealers, things of that nature. When I first started, I just wanted money, I wanted fame, but paying my phone bill and buying those new Jordans was all I was thinkin bout! Cars, Money, Clothes and Hoes! So, I used to say "fuck a major, Independent all day!" ...But there are pros and cons to everything. I've met a couple of artists, I didnt know em. You don't know em. But these guys had everything Bentley's, Big houses, all of that, because they was caking off of their music with no deal!

But I don't think money would completly satisfy me. I want my music to be heard by all. Nothing can repalce all the percs that come with a Major label deal. The outlets. The exposure. I'm not really into money like that...I just want my bills paid, food, roof over my head...you know? And the freedom to make music as I please. I'm not just in it for the money. I'm not a gimmick, or trend! I love music and I think my writings can touch somebody in Minnesota, or California, or even South Korea, but how could I do that independently? Another thing is, NOBODY FROM NEW BERN HAS EVER ACHEIVED A MAJOR LABEL DEAL. I think my city deserves that shine. I think it would motivate the city, bring it up. I dont know, I want to live forever through music. I want to be an Icon. A part of history...BIG. Only a Major could help me do that!

Great mindset, you know Team FUA has your back for sure we appreciate the time you took out to do this and we hope we can turn more fans onto your music.

FU | TV: Haw Branch MX

With riders like Daniel Salese riding in a purple Middle Finger tee (out of stock), taking wins the boys picked up their riding at a great pace Sunday at Haw Branch MX in Beulaville, NC.

Justin Riggs after having a bad start his first moto fought back to get a hole-shot and returned to the track with a strong few laps up front and rode his race for 4th. Chad Knowles also pulled to the gate doing work battling for several laps for top spot and finishing 2nd to another quick homie.

Chaz Wilson and Anthony Laird gave a show in A class battling on the Honda 250 & 450 respectively. Chaz, 555, returning to the SMX series the first time after an off weekend at Windy Hill brought the South of the Boarder/Jimmy Weinert Racing bike up grabbing hole-shots and moto wins. Laird (riding a borrowed 917 Honda) did fight to get on the track and grabbed a ride on a 450 Honda and got right back to putting up some fast laps with a hole-shot and fighting hard in the front of pack each moto.

There were plenty of other impressive riders in the other classes right down to the little kids; a few people had to get medical assistance but it was fairly safe and lots of fun to watch! Round 7 of the SMX series will be held at the official track of EasternMedia.net, 5 Points Motocross Park. Though Phil, owner of 5 Points, took a dig this weekend he said the track should be in shape for next weeks event, we're sure he will he makes it perfect when our guys go out to practice.
